Need desperate help with my mercury....

I have a Mercury Blueband 20hp with some power issues.

The story goes, in the beginning myself and my friend that has some outboard experience found that the engine was running on just one cylinder. Back then both plugs were firing.

We thought it was the ignition system so changed most of it. It worked fantastic for about 5/10 mins, giving full power, then it started dying/loss of power. Pumping a little more fuel into the carb didn't help, nor changing all the fuelline system (eliminating air getting in).

Having taken out the plugs today, I found them both fouled up with a thick black oily covering, both sparked fine on both leads but the engine has is now again running on just one cylinder.

The engine only starts when the one lead is on the one spark plug. If I change leads on the one cylinder that's working, it just misfires/spits.

Has anyone any idea as to the problem/solution, as both myself and my friend are stumped.

Cheers, Ryan.

Because of the many differant types of ign. systems used and differant 20 HP models let us have so numbers off the engine or better yet ign. components--Bob

Check compression of cylinder not firing.

The reason the engine "misfires/spits", if I understand you correctly, is because you are connecting the lead from the ignition components for one cylinder and placing it on the other cylinder. The engine will never run even close to correctly because the ignition components for each cylinder are timed to fire for that specific cylinder. When you "cross" the leads you are trying to make the cylinder fire when the piston is not in the correct position. Same thing happens when you run the spark plug wires on a car to wrong cylinders.

Have to agree with FullBoat59 here, however, I've been told by a merc mechanic that sometimes the float can stick or somehow the carb can leak - if it's the lower piston not firing (assuming they are vertical) - then ch eck your carb to make sure it's not leaking. Doesn't run good on one cylinder when the other is full of liquid gas.....
