Need Engine Information for 90HP Mercury

I bought a used 90HP Mercury engine with power tilt. The guy a bought it from didn't know much about the engine. There is a data plate that shows Model 90ELPTO and Serial Number: A936266. The engine cowl says Mercury 90HP. and also shows 90HP on lower unit. I don't know much about these engines.<br /><br />I need to know the year model?<br />How many cylinders? Is this a 2-stroke or 4-stroke engine. I am trying to find wiring diagrams but need more specific engine information. Thanks.

It'a 1986 year. and would have a thin red/grey stripe.<br />Should be a 6 cylinder, but in 1987 went to 3 cylinders.It will be a 2 stroke. How can you tell it is a 1986 model? <br />My tach has adjustments for 4, 6, 8 cylinder 4-stroke and a ALT (alternate 12-pole) setting.<br /><br />Thanks,

a300- It is likely you need to use the 12pole alternator setting on the tach.
