Re: Need Experts' Suggestionsn On buying a boat ----> "NEWBIE"

Alright, got another question. I have looked around and people sell their boats with different size (hp) outboard. What size would be suitable for a 17" boat, something like the bayliner capri? Thanks.

85-125hp was the standard engine range for 17-18ft Bayliner/Maxum boats, of course the more hp the better, but you have to look at the CG plate on the boat, and go by that. A 19' Boat should have at least a 125-150hp motor on it.

Hey J.
years don t always matter with a boat if it has been well taken care of
its actually hours you want to keep in mind, how often did the seller take it out, how long did they stay out

Information about hours can be helpful when buying used boats, but hours can also be deceptive. My 30 year old boat/motor does not have an hours meter on it, but I could install a meter today and start with zero hours. Nobody would ever believe that my 30 year old boat had zero hours, but after another year or two of use with the meter installed, my boat appear like a low hours boat. The hours meter is only as accurate as when it was installed. It should not be assumed that the hours meter was installed when the boat was originally put into use. Hours are usually tracked for maintenance purposes. The presence of an hours meter might indicate that the prior owner was a stickler for maintenance, but even this assumption could be a reach.
