Need flywheel for Johnson 40 Outboard!

I have a few quick questions. I have a 1986 Johnson Electric Start 40 Horse Outboard. In the process of trying to rebuild it, I goofed and broke my flywheel. The number on my flywheel is 583011. I have access to another flywheel that has the number 582438. All I know so far about this other flywheel is that it is off a 50 Horse Johnson from the 1980's. So, my first question is, are these two flywheels interchangeable? Do I have to have a flywheel with a number matching mine, or is there a way to cross reference to see if the other flywheel would work? My last question is, if the other flywheel won't work, where do I get a reasonably priced used flywheel for my motor? Thanks.

Tink

OK, I gotta ask -- how did you break a flywheel?

Yeah, good question. I tried to take a shortcut and used a gear puller to take the flywheel off. I ended up breaking several pieces off the edge of the flywheel. Should have bought a harmonic puller or OMC Flywheel Puller. Hindsight is 20/20. I emailed Twin City, but haven't received a reply yet. Can anybody answer my question from above? Anybody?

Thanks for your help. Twin City had one for $100 which was the best price I had found until I found one on eBay for $24.99. Thanks again. Next time (hopefully there is not a next time, I'll use the right tool to pull my flywheel so I don't break it. Tink
