Re: Need help from the pros!

So I have the boat suspended and pulled the trailer out from under it. Got cold and don't have the materials to start the sanding process yet so I pushed the trailer back under it for the time being. Will post pics soon. I used 4x6x8's for the framing. I'm sure its overkill but I would rather have it over engineered like most things I do..haha

I have painted cars & fiberglass cowl hoods in the past and a few tonneau covers. I'm looking for the best finish I can do at home and getting it restriped etc. It's a trailer boat and won't stay in the water when not in use. We have 2 other boats that sit on the shore stations. I am planning on bringing it back and forth from our lake house

Hey Derekc, Polyurethes (PU) like Imron and evolution and Linear Polys (LPU) like Awlgrip and Sterling are considered the flagship in marine paints, because the cure the hardest and withstand harsh environments and have good chemical resitance, but they can be tricky to apply by spray or even roll/tip. The go on "as sprayed" so the top coats need to be straight, as they dont require or even recommend cutting and buffing.

Acrylic Urethanes (AU) like Awlcraft, Nason, Concept and such are only slightly less resistant, yet that have better adhesion properties, spray on easy, and buff out smooth and shiny...These are also easily repaired when damaged, unlike the former.

Just food for thought, but if you go with a Poly, PPG Evolution or Essential will be cheaper than Dupont Imron, but the same otherwise.

Thank you very much! The more information the better.

Re: Need help from the pros!

Ok guys i am finally ready to start sanding this baby down. Do i have to use two different paints for the bottom or can i use antifouling on the whole bottom up to the top rails? I am planning on having it redone in the next few months. I know this is an old thread but why start another. Considering the Aquagard now.

Will this boat be left in Saltwater for extended periods of time?

It's kind of a budget thing. The link I posted is for the Low budget painter but will yield a very durable painted hull. I used it on mine with great results. The 2 Part urethane paints will cost about $200 and offer a little better performance. Epoxy paints about the same. Again just depends on how much you want to pay.

WOW! There ARE to many!!! Top of the line... AWLGRIP, Interlux, SuperMarine all the way down the Rustoleum like I used. Some use good old Car Paint. As long as it's gunna be a Trailer Queen, Like I said, you can use just about anything you want and get good results. With paint, it's all about the prep and the application. If done right, and maintained properly, it'll last a good long time.;)

Thanks! I just dont want to have an issue where i am doing it twice because of an issue with the chosen brand or paint not adhering to the surface. I had a horrible experience with a cowl hood that for some reason the hood kept gasing off and leaving pinholes in the surface. Finally just cut it up with a sawzall and gave up..lol

It's just like I said...If the substrate is prepped correctly and you use the proper chemicals, primers, topcoats and application methods then it shouldn't be a problem.
