need help getting this old rude back in operation

hi , well here is my isue. i have a 1970 rude 85 hp elect shift and the motor was running fine till a coupple weekend's ago.so heres my proublem motor starts,idles and runs good in foward till you pass like 1/4 throttle then it will die instant. i checked compression and changed plugs and fuel filter ,bought manual . and took it to the water today and still the same thing so i ve ben reading in here alot of simmular proublems and it seams to me that a carb rebuild is in order ???? or is ther any other thing it might be ?? i am somewhat knowelgeable on this motor do to a lot of lower end proublems witch is now fixed and works fine .and go figure that now there is another proublem .. also that 85 hp is on a 16' glasspar fiberglass boat and sience i had it it just dosent seam like the motor is not wot i dont have a tach but i move along at about 20mph does that seam right?????.i know that its old so i dont expect much ..i have trie squeezing the primer bulb when passing 1/4 throttle and nothing ,tried chocking past 1/4 throttle and nothing so i guess there is no way around a carb overhull .........OR IS THERE?? any and all info is verry app thanks .. john :confused:

It definately sounds like you could use a carb rebuild, but there are some good posts in here about using seafoam in you fuel to clean a problem carb, however if the carb is pretty bad, im not so sure seafoam alone will solve your problem. Others will jump in and tell you exactly how to do it, there are some smart guys on here, hope you get her running strong and gl
