Just joined and almost a boat owner so very new to this. Please be gentle. I've come across a boat that I am considering buying. Price seems reasonable for a gamble ($500) but just trying to get more info as currently there is very little. What I am guessing is that it is a 1966 lonestar or chrysler. It has a chrysler 105 which is supposedly original to the boat and runs. I have more pictures but will post one to start as it may be obvious to everyone else but me.

Welcome aboard. And the first question back in a case like this is always "What does the paperwork say?".

She hasn't located the paperwork yet. I know with time she will find it as she had it registered and on the water a few years ago but I have a small window to make the purchase as she has had other offers. From what I could locate online, it looks like the 1966 chrysler chesapeake in the old brochures (The Chrysler Marine website) but confused about the railing? Maybe optional or aftermarket? If this is in fact the correct boat, is it a good buy? I know it needs quite a bit of work with the interior but all of the functionals are indeed, functional.

no paperwork, no deal.

also you can learn a lot about a boat by the way the seller takes care of it. Here, the seller doesn't know that the tarp goes over the boat, not under it. That would concern me.

Also, even if that motor runs today, don't buy it unless you can afford to repower it. Your $500 is merely a down payment.

She put the tarp down under it so she didn't have to weed whack under it. I asked when I was last there. I guess I'll just wait for the paperwork but was just hoping to get an answer earlier so I could begin my research on value and see some finished versions. Thanks for the advice :)

In this case, the paperwork is the value! Without that paperwork, the value is much closer to zero then with it.

Old fiberglass boats like that generally have little intrinsic value... So it's worth what someone will pay.

ok, so I got it confirmed. It is a 1966 Chrysler Chesapeake 18'. The motor and trailer are factory original and matching to the boat. It's pretty nice to look at the motor and see "Made in USA" on everything. I can't find anyone who owns one online so I can see a complete one. Really curious to see what it'd look like with the proper resto.

Not the best pic but here's the 1966 sales brochure: 1966 Chrysler boats (You'll love the dealer's hand-written prices!)

Thanks to everyone for their input. I decided to move on and let this one pass. I have since purchased my very first boat and am very pleased with it thus far :D It's a 1988 Thundercraft 177 Nova w/ 3.7 Merc. All original vinyl that is in great condition, runs like a top, and a nicely maintained trailer to boot. Just cleaning and some minor refreshing needed and am loving every minute of it. I will post a pic and let this thread go to heaven. Thanks again :)IMG_20130527_201220.jpg

Make sure you read up on that 470 Merc, so you know it's shortcomings and how to overcome them.

Looks like a nice first boat, though.

Thanks :) After the first boat opportunity(term used very loosely:lol:), we kind of got boat fever and quickly discovered that you get what you pay for. We payed considerably more for the 88 but still think we did pretty well for the condition. There are a lot of junk boats out there disguised as nice ones and priced the same. It's nice being able to enjoy the boat without having the payments of a newer one which allows us to have more fun with it and be more aptly prepared for the maintenance and repairs which will undoubtedly occur. We are trying to pace ourselves on investing in it but it's hard to resist! Never had so much fun "working" on something :joyous:
