Hi Folks,
I need help figuring out what the horse power is and year of this motor. Based on these number if you could provide me information about the outdrive as well, that would be helpfull. The model #, I think is omc-20-980536. The serial # is 1881462 another number by this S 7-23-92. I much appreciate the help.

Is it an OMC Cobra or a Stringer?

980536 is the part # of an exhaust riser on a 120HP, 2.5L engine.

You might at least help the search out by saying what kind of an engine it is, 4cyl, V6, V8, Chevy, Ford, year of the boat.
Best of all would be some pictures if you could post them.

Your engine model number will be something like 504BPMED. It should be located on the rocker cover (valve cover) on the top of the engine. If you cannot locate this, you may cross refernce the outdrive model number (port side of outdrive behind the trim ram). The outdrive model number will be six digits. Hopefully this helps. If you post your Model number(s) I will be able to help.

"S 7-23-92"

If that is some kind of production date, then it is a Cobra drive.

Re: Need help identifying omc i/o motor

Thanks for the feedback, folks.

Dubs283: I looked where you suggested and could not find the model #. However, I was taking apart the fuel pump and saw some numbers on the starboard side of the block. GM 8770087 and I also saw 336-87 to the right of the previous numbers. I hope this solves the problem, if not Hystat provided valuable information. I got those orginal number fromt the exhaust riser (didn't know what that part was previous). The boat is a 1972 bellboy, the motor a 4 cylinder. The guy who sold it to me said it was 140 hp. Inside the glove box I found a couple owner pamplets and one of those said the motor was 120 hp. I feel confidnet now that it is a 120 hp 2.5 L engine. The main reason why I posted in the first place was to collect information to be able to get the appropriate shop manual. Talked with a couple folks about purchasing a shop manual and they won't deal with me since I don't know the model number. By the way the outdrive has no numbers on it what so ever. Anyhow I really need a shop manual or generic manual so I can start tearing it apart.
