So I was given a Mercury motor with a rope so tight on the prop it cut really easy with a dull blade, anyway
Serial number is 7216272 can’t find much in it besides it’s a Mercury 18/20/25hp xd. I don’t know a year or if it’s a 18 a 20 or a 25hp
Next problem is I got it to fire over with stater spray and jumping the stater (easy enough) it has neutral and reverse (spun CCW fine with top end spinning properly) but in drive it doesn’t spin the top end. It just clicks in the very bottom end where all the prop bearings and such are.. I thought maybe it’s the pinion gear in the very bottom but why would reverse work but drive doesn’t? If that gear was stripped bad enough it’d click in both correct?? I took the lower unit off and when I try to spin it in drive you can see the shifter almost pick up like it’s not engaging all the way and I’ve got vice grips and pulled as hard as I could while a buddy spun it same issue
Please help hoping this motor would be a quick flip but doesn’t seem to be the case
