Hello I'm new to the boating world and just bought a sea Ray 170 with the 3.0 mercruiser. It seems like there may be some water in the oil as it is a little milky, however it has not risen on the dipstick at all. Any ideas on what it may be? Thanks!

:welcome: to the iboats forum:

Was the motor oil freshly changed and clean when you bought the boat? Ticks me off when I read about people that someone has unloaded their problems on. It could be the most common, a cracked block due to improper winterization. How are you at mechanics and do you have a good set of tools?

Thanks for the reply! No I do not believe the oil had been changed and clean. I bought it from a buddy, and I don't think he knew. I figured if it was a cracked block the water would have cause it to rise on the dipstick, but I don't know much. I'm decent at working with 4 wheelers and trucks, and have tools but have no experience with boats.

An I/O engine is just a car engine with a few specialised bits. Nothing to worry about. If you have the manual, you'll be fine. As for the oil level rising, give it time. Only takes a couple of tablespoons of water to make a chocolate milkshake in the crankcase.

As for your 'buddy' not knowing, bollocks! The most common reason for a boat being sold at the beginning of the season is there is something wrong with it, and if it's an area that requires winterising, it's a good bet it is because it wasn't winterised properly, Q.E.D, cracked block.

You have a few of options. Find a good block and transfer all the accessories over. Buy a new/reman short or long motor, and transfer the accessories. (http://bpi.ebasicpower.com/indmarengines/181base.php) Buy a new complete engine and drop it straight in... (http://www.marinepowerservice.com/Bo...ctID/23367.cfm)
