I took the prop off my '67 merc 200 20hp and found a lot of broken stuff the ring that holds everything in and the bearing carrier were both badly cracked so I got new ones of both the only problem is that the carrier won't go in deep enough to clear the threads so I can screw on the ring the motor is old and all the threads that where between the ring and the prop were worn away but the ones that the old ring were screwed into are still there. if I take the shaft and bearings out of the motor the carrier goes back far enough to get on the ring. So any help guys??what am I doing Wrong???

Re: Need help putting my old merc back together

Those treads at the back of the gear hsg. aren't treads it's a laberith seal for the exhaust to th prop, I think all the carrier were the same on the old 20s, ck. it with the old one for leagth, is the shaft all the way in the gear case, is reverse gear and brg. all the way in the carrier, is there a rough spot in the case stopping the carrier from going all the way in, I cann't think of any thing else right now--Bob

If the carrier goes in all the way without the propeller shaft or reverse gear and bearing mounted on end of carrier, try turning the drive shaft clockwise when you are putting the carrier and propshaft in. it could be the reverse gear is not meshing with the pinion gear.
