Hey guys, it's Mrdrh99, I have posted a lot inthe Mariner 4 thread. I'm really having a serious problem. I'm currently pushing my boat with a 30# Endura Minn Kota motor. It does ok, but I"m really looking for more speed. How fast do you think an outboard 3hp or less (really looking at a 1 1/2 hp johnson) vs a 55lb trolling motor can move my Mariner 4? I have been looking at the Hangkai 3.5hp outboards but i'm skeptical because of the mixed reviews on the quality. What do you guys think? Thanks!

Re: Need help quick!

Do you no how much your boat weighs with all your mods and does your boat have a vhull or added trim tabs? Also if you are using the trolling motor in prtected waters then you will have to find a gas equivalent. im still trying to talk dnr into recognizing propane as a safe alturnative to a trolling motor

With myself, gear including battery and trolling motor I'm thinking 500lb, including weight of boat. It does have an inflatable keel

Re: Need help quick!

Will a 55lb trolling motor push my boat faster than my 30lb?

Or, I have been looking at a Johnson 1.5hp outboard on ebay for a couple days....will this give me more than either a 30 or 55 trolling?
Thank!

Re: Need help quick!

Engines with less than 3.5 HP are poor performers, but much better than rowing though. A 3.5, 2 stroke motor pushes a 430 rib with total load of 750 Lb at displacement speed of 6 knots at wot.

Happy Boating

Re: Need help quick!

It also depends on where you are trying to use the boat. Fresh water is usually a gas engine no no in the lower 48
In salt water I dont think that small a motor would be able to handle the currents

Re: Need help quick!

so, I was going to pick up a 1.5hp johnson outboard off of ebay, after reading your comments I decided against it. thinking I'll get a larger trolling motor and a second battery. 3 of the 4 lakes in my area are electric motor only, dont really think it'll be worth it. I'll just wait until my Mariner dies and then I'll be upsizing to possibly a Newport or Saturn and then I'll get a decent outboard....thanks guys

Are you going to get a Fresh Water trolling motor or a Salt Water trolling motor?

Re: Need help quick!

You might want to look at a Salt Water trolling motor. They tend to be stronger than the fresh water ones and it sounds like the extra power is what you are looking for
