Need help to decode parts diagram

Ok guys 25r78c 1978 johnson 25 seahorse. I cant seem to find how to keep this motor in upright position so it will not drop back in the water. It does have the hardware that keeps the motor locked in during operation but seems to be missig the parts that its supposed to keep it out of water once its back on the dock. Since I dont know what was supposed to hold it up in the first place, i also dont know what is missing. if somebody could tell me which parts are responsible with the upright position lock I would appreciate it.

No #69 is I am sure the operating lever for the tilt lock mechanism. All the other bits shown below it that latch onto bar #24 to hold the motor in the down position.

I cannot see any parts there for supporting the motor in the tilted position.

On a later model see HERE it is the two parts #113 and #115 together with #111, four shouldered screws #112 (only three shown) and the little spring #119 that do the job.

That motor does not have a positive lock to hold it tilted up. But what it does have is a pair of friction cones Part # 99 on my diagram below. The whole assembly is held together by bolt # 54 and nut # 45. tighten the nut #45 just enough till it applies enough pressure to the friction cones to hold it up.

This not sufficient for trailering. If you must trailer it in tilted position, get yourself a Transom Saver. They sell them here at iboats.

EDIT: You may have to loosen one of the clampscrews #49 while adjusting the tilt friction, then retighten it when satisfied with the tilt.

I will try to tighten the screws thnx. I am not trailering the boat, i am towing it behind my bigger boat to catalina, I wonder if i can mount the transom saver to my actual tansom....i'd doubt it.

you probably don't need to worry about a transom saver to tow behind another boat, the transom saver keeps pressure of the transom on a trailer when you rail over some train tracks going 45 and the trailer ends up 2 feet in the air.

I see, by the way F R thnx for the tip, I tighten the nut and now the motor stays up rock solid, i am thinking about tightening the nut a little bit more and then tow it. We will see how it goes, whats the worst that can happen, the trnsom will fall off and the boat will sink, and ill lose my boat and motor.
