Hi everyone, I just purchased this boat with a 2001 60hp yamaha outboard on it. The motor runs great but the tilt and trim is not working. I do not know much about tilt and trim since I am used to smaller outboards. The person I bought it from told me that all it needs is more transmission fluid. First of all when I hit the tilt button it just makes one clicking noise and does not do anything. Please Help. Thanks

I am not an expert on this but I have worked on various tilt trim units.

if the motor does not spin, you have a motor or electrical problem.

if the motor turns and the tilt will not go all the way up you have low fluid or air.

make sure your battery connections are clean and tight.

If you disconnect the green and blue wires that go to the tilt trim motor, you can try touching the blue and green leads to the hot lead on the starter solenoid one at a time. one is for up and one is for down. do not disconect the black ground wire. do not touch both wires to the hot at the same time. make sure not to ground any loose wires.

if the motor turns, you have an electrical problem probably a bad solenoid or bad control wires.

the motor housing on some Yamaha's is steel. they rust out, ruining the motor.

if the motor will not turn you may have a motor problem

the clymer repair manual has a detailed troubleshooting guide on this problem.

On that model, you will need to ground the green lead from the trim motor and hold the blue to make trim motor run up. Reverse the process for down.
