Re: Need help with a century transom rebuild

I think you have some grinding to do there.

It is hard to tell, but it looks like the cracks are in whatever was used to adhear the original wood to the transom skin, probably poly resin. You should be able to grind that off and get to solid glass, but be careful not to grind through the skin.

You want the plywood to lay flush to the fiberglass, but small variations will be filled in by the glue. When you say the transom is not flat do you mean the section where the plywood goes is curved or that the flat plywood does not go all the way across? I would think it should be flat around the outdrive hole. You should be able to laminate up a core using a couple pieces of plywood, glue it in and glass over it around the edges and onto the fiberglass portion of the transom.

What do you plan to use; thickened epoxy, PL Premuim?

Got cut off here at work anyways if you look at my transom there are two side pieces that are not part of the motor transom my out drive is recessed in. I think the best thing to do is tab everythig seperate then attempt to cover it in one piece. Ill agree that those cracks are from the glue of the transom I just wanted another opinion
Thanks for your reply

I used exterior grade plywood.

It would be a pain in the arse to try to cover those three sections with one continuous layer of glass. I think it would be fine if you cover each one individually and have them overlap in the area between each section.

Thanks again im going to rethink that. Im so hung up on the marine plywood Im thinking that exterior grade is probably good seeings how that lasted 23 years under that terriable lay up. Nice job on yours read your post mine also was all stapled togeather stringers and all.
