Need help with a distribtor on a 89 omc 460

I am trying to see if i can change my old school points over to a hei dist. ican get one for a 460 , the question is would I have tochange some wiring or componets on the engine and would itchange the engines performsnce? Thanks

Howdy,

You won't see much improvement over the points type dist unless you'll turn it above 6000 RPM or so. I know MSD has a pretty good marine type dist and there's probably others.

I would suggest saving your money. (If that's an OMC King Cobra, you'll need it for the manifolds and coupler!!)

I purchased the boat from a navy capt. motor and manifolds are in exllent shape like new, just tired of messing with points . and i can get a hei for cheap from a friend. i was just wondering about the wiring.

There's really no messing around. What sort of HEI are you talking about? HEI usually refers to a GM automotive type dist. Plus, there's usually a hassle getting it to work correctly with the ESA. For that reason, I wouldn't screw with it unless the distributor was damaged or worn out.........My 460 ran for nearly 20 years (ignition) trouble free with the original points type dist.

I sold my OMC 460 distributor to a guy that had a 90 460 King Cobra with a defective (and NLA) Spitfire ignition system on it. He went for my easy to install and get working points type dist instead of trying to re-invent the wheel.

Good luck. I wouldn't do it.

Thanks after thinking about it ,your right plus the boat came with 6 extra sets of points it was taking care, thanks for your help.
