I have a 1972 18hp evinrude, the problem is it idles rough. the book says set the low speed needle one and a half turns out from seated and adj. from there. on mine it will only start and run with it open about one quarter turn, and it will idle the best when closed all the way. I don"t think this is right. the carb has new parts in it, and I took it apart and cleaned it and made sure the holes under the welsh plug were clean. what am I missing.

Check for air leaks.

Many years ago my dad had a lawn mower that he was working on. He took the carburetor apart and cleaned it out. After putting it back on, he couldn't get it to run worth a darn. He fiddled with the needles for a few days and finally gave up in disgust. After he passed on, I got the lawnmower from my mom and worked on it. When my dad had put the bowl on, the o-ring gasket slipped a bit and left an air gap into the bowl. Whenever the motor was running, it was drawing some air into the bowl and siphoning extra gas into the intake manifold. I seated the gasket and the mower has run like a champ ever since.

The best advice is to take the carburetor apart again and ensure that everything is in place. If things aren't running as expected, sometimes you have to go back to square one and start over.

Today I took carb off and checked it over, now when I put it back on it"s running pretty good at 3/4 open, it"s still a lttle rough but better than it was. I think it"s about as good as it"s going to be, thanks.
