Sorry if this is in the wrong section

My control was disassembled by someone that should only own the tools that come with your car to change a flat.

That being said, I am missing the button that allows you to operate the throttle In neutral. I can't seem to to d that part anywhere. Any way to test that the switch which is actuated by the button to make sure it works?

Re: Need help with control parts

There are several different buttons for the remotes that look similar to yours. Unfortunately the only one I could find for a panel mount (which is what you have) is NLA Mercury... The part number is -88149, it might be worth looking on eBay....

This is where you can see your remote in parts (at least I think it's yours) -> http://www.mercruiserparts.com/Show...g&inbr=1989&bnbr=90&bdesc=REMOTE+CONTROL+ASSY

There should be a rod that the button pushes on. If you push on that with the blunt end of a smallish screwdriver it should dis-engage the shift and only operate the throttle.

Tried to get the signature thing done Chris, lets see how it comes out.

Thank you again for all of your help, I truly appreciate it!

The lady at the parts counter here at my local boat store couldnt even find the right control, and I towed the boat there for them to see it in person. may not be back to that parts dept any time soon as its not the first time she has proven her lack of ability.

I wouldn't be too harsh on her. Remote controls are particularly difficult to look up. I know this stuff quite well and it still took me at least 10 minutes to find the right drawing.

Signature looks good.... Here's mine.

Re: Need help with control parts

Called a marine shop about 15 min away and they had the button in stock. $2.50! Can't hate it. She engages neutral perfectly.

That diagram made that possible, thanks again!

So, that is an Alpha One drive correct? Any reason I can't run a generic 80w-90 in it or would a synthetic be worth it?

I have always been on the fence with the synthetic topic. I change my drive oil frequently since I own old stuff to ensure no water in oil and because a gallon jug of gear oil is like $14 at Walmart.

The oil that came out was dirty, but no water in it! Had some crud on the drain plug magnet, but no chunks all fine enough to be slime like.

Want to get her out on the lake before I dump the cash into interior parts and materials. Any issue with running it without a hydrofoil for a quick test ride to verify all good operation and no cracks to let water into oil.

Don't know. You haven't given any information... wait... signature... yes... Alpha One. Oil... OMG . That subject has been done to death, and then some. Everyone who draws breath has a different opinion, so all I can give you is mine, and what the service manual recommends. Ok... here we go, by the book, ONLY use Quicksilver High Performance Gear Lube in the drive... (which is what I do).

That sounds pretty good.

Hydrofoils made someone a lot of money, and benefited very few boats... A hydrofoil should ONLY be fitted to a boat where the engine has been installed at least 1" above the normal dimension... Most boats don't fit that category. With outboards it's relatively easy to change the installation height. With sterndrives it's particularly difficult. It involves removing the engine, glassing up the hole and cutting a new one higher up... Not recommended.

So, unless the engine installation is higher than normal, trash-can the hydrofoil, permanently! If installed on standard height engines it can actually be dangerous.

And I know you're about to ask how to determine the installation height. Easy. A 'normal' installation will have the anti-cavitation plate on the drive level with the bottom of the hull. So, trim the engine down until the anti-cav plate is parallel to the bottom of the boat. Then look along the anti-cav plate and see where it lines up with the hull....

Cheers,

Chris........

Re: Need help with control parts

Interesting, I never would have guessed that a hydrofoil is not necessary. As always, thank you for taking the time to fill me in!

When we get the first test run underway I will see how the drive rides in the water. I doubt it is high, actually seems kind of low to me, but that could just be the trailer as it is a low rider. Had to get a 5" drop for a non-lifted 2500hd Chevy.

Just got done painting the trailer up, looks great! Any guess on the hull manufacturer, all it says is "Tara" on one side. image.jpg

For the vast majority of boats, a hydrofoil is not necessary... As I said, someone did a great sell job on the boating public!

Can't help you on the hull... Not really my part of the world... :D

Great to know! I can re-direct that $100 towards a better sonar

Thanks again! Are you still Down Under, or in the states?
