All,

I have been looking for a new set of binnacle controls for my boat, and just purchased some off e-bay. I have a 1977 V4 Johnson 140, and I was looking for a set of controls pre- 95 so they would be compt. with my motor (plug and play), but couldn't pass up this new in the box set for $75 w/ T&T and ignition built in (p/n 176372). I know I will need to purchase an adapter harness, but what else will I need?? Will I need a systems check gauge?? Anyone that could provide a list of things I will need, so I can start tracking them down, I would be extremely greatful. You guys have been a tremendous help thanks.

Re: Need help with controls compatibility

You need part # 176711 It's a harness that connects from your new control, into your older engine. If you need the trim harness, part # 175898.

176771 price: $ 79.95
175898 price: $ 31.50

Thank you so much for replying. Do you sell these parts, or are those just avg. prices? Also, I have heard alot about needing either a system check "light up" gauge, or a system check tach. Are these required for my set-up? Thanks again for you help.

No system check on your 'old' 1977 (that is, there's no support for such a thing on the 1977 powerhead wiring harness). If the controls have the red plug, that's all the plug-n-play functionality you're going to get.

There's an overheat sensor on that powerhead (maybe two). Make SURE there's either a buzzer in your binnacle controls (unlikely), or that you hook up a buzzer or overheat light on your dash. I hereby vote against the light, as I have bought two otherwise nice V4s, for under $100 each, which toasted when the owner didn't notice the red overheat light in full sunlight.

Somewhat off-topic.... The 140 is a nice motor, but represents OMC trying tune a specific core design to it's limit. The 85 and 115hp are the same 99.6 inch displacement; your motor just has a tuned exhaust, fancier pistons, fat carbs, forged crank, etc..

Re: Need help with controls compatibility

Continuation of previous post...

As a result, the 140 will overheat and 'toast' a cylinder quite a bit more easily than the 85. Two-strokes overheat when run lean, and V4s can run a cylinder lean when one of the 4 main jets gets clogged with dirty gas. Which is all a long-winded way of suggesting you a) make sure the carbs are internally clean and that you run fresh, clean gas, and 2) check the compression on all 4 to see how things are at present. Also, don't lug that motor - prop it so it turns 6000 with your average load. Do NOT run it wide-open-throttle at 4800 rpm, etc.

Re: Need help with controls compatibility

ledgefinder,

Thanks for the heads up. I recently had a full tune-up on the motor. The compression check yeiled between 118 and 115 on all cylinders, fuel pump replaced, water impeller replaced, decorbonized, plugs, wires, and the carbs rebuilt. My buddy said it was in good shape and should do all right. I have the red bullet plug on the motor, but since I bought the newer controls, I will probably have to purchase the adapter harnesses mentioned above. I will have to see what it looks like when it comes in. I was just unsure if the adapter harness required that system check guage hooked up. Thanks for the invaluable information, you guys are really amazing. Hopefully I will be able to get a season or two out of this "old dawg" before I have to purchase a newer one. Thx Shane.

Re: Need help with controls compatibility

I hate to beat a dead horse, but if somebody could look at this harness and tell me if it would work I would be very greatful. They say this is what I need, but don't have a part number for me. Just trying to get this thing fixed, I think I can hear the fish calling me in my sleep... Thx
http://i20.ebayimg.com/03/i/03/34/8d/53_1.JPG
