need help with cross ref. merc drives

hi i have a guy who has a mid 80s' boat with a ford v-8 and he says its an alpha drive..
i have a 89 5.7 with an alpha 1
what years do alpha 1 gen 1 cover on v-8 fords in the 80's mine is an 89 gm 5.7 ? any help would be good as i got the wrong drive on mine and if this fits i can get it cheap

Fords were used on the Pre-Alphas,... Back in the 70s.........

You need to know the gear ratio of the drive your looking to buy. Ford V-8 is not enough information to go on. Can you get the serial numbers off the drive?

Sellers will say anything to relieve you from your money. If it was Ford, it was 77 or earlier, and the one drives weren't as heavy duty as your Alpha I.
Get the right thing, don't be going backwards. You would also have to change the shaft that goes into the coupler. Different sizes on Ford and Chevy V8's
If your present drive is good, and the drive you was using before the engine problem, why replace it now?

don a guy told me he had a boat with an alpha 1 in it with trim pump and lots of other stuff real dirt cheap. he lives close by the boat is a parts boat..i was just thinking grab an xtra drive. but i think he's telling me mid 80's and its late 70's boat..i will ask him the hull year as maybe its a gm motor
