Can anyone tell me if there is a special tool/trick in getting to the No.1 spark plug (behind the metal coolant reservoir) without taking the reservoir off and therefore needing a new gasket, seal, etc...

Thank you!

I took a sparkplug socket, the kind that have a hex built into the end. Then cutout some of the body and welded it back together. The spark plug top just about pokes out there the ratchet would insert. Then I just use a wrench to turn the socket - slow, but works.

Ya they are pretty tight but I have a craftsman spark plug socket with a hex on the top. I did not have to modify the tool at all but I did have to use a wrench instead of a ratchet.

Standard socket/wobble joint/extension works fine for me.

Thanks Silverline...
This is what I used for the No.4 cylinder, but as you mentioned, I might have to grind down one of my wrenches to fit...

I'll give this a shot, also... Thought about trying this, but my u-joint socket was broken...so I'll be buying a new one.

I appreciate the input...

and are you talking about the #1 cylinder (closest to the bow) or #4 (stern)?

when i did my rebuild this winter the number 1 and 2 spark plugs where easy to get out it was the number 3 and 4 that where hard to get out because of the riser

Yes, that is correct...

No.1 being "bow" and No.4 being at the stern...

I'm not near my manual, but is the No.1 not the cylinder closest to the bow?

yes front of motor what's confusing to every body the number 1 & 2 plugs are behing the exhaust manifold very easy to remove, the number 3 & 4 are behing the riser and exhaust manifold that's why there difficult to get out here is a picture the red arrows point to plugs you can see the where the riser is in the way of #3 and #4plugs

So, I just picked up these little socket cap sets to put on the end of the spark plug socket... Let you know how this works...
