Boomer,

How much to install windows XP? this unit only comes with corel and I would have to then add it to the price.

You got one from this vendor? How do you like and was it all that was promised. I was reading his payment terms and responces and he seems a little short. Could be a wrong read but your experience should mean alot.

To be honest I barely notice when i have it on. It makes a sort of "hum" or "whisper" like noise but thats it........I only can hear it if the hub is the ONLY thing running in the room and there is no backround noise.

Re: Need help with picking out a laptop for home use.

Pointer, the link I posted comes with XP Home edition, just like mine did. Someone in my thread posted they paid double what I did just 7? months ago. The 600m had a very successfull two year run and dell just recently quit making it. Currently there are several ebay vendors offering new 600ms. I got mine from a buy it now vendor not the one I posted above.

I have not received mine yet. I just won it last nite. I went by the widespread appreciation of Dell laptops on this forum. Read my thread if you haven't done so yet.

http://forums.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=37;t=002416

I could probably get a 'slightly' used one on ebay for 25$ shipped. I might consider one even though Mrs Boomyal's unit sits on a glass desk top. Sometimes it stays on for a good part of the day and I'm sure that the 600m generates more heat than her Toshiba 366 mhz Celeron did.

Boomyal, the Celeron M (Mobile) may very well generate less heat than the Toshiba.

That was my attitude Pointer. I think it was 18R who talked about going crazy doing the whole review thing. Ya hate to put 500$ at risk but compared to what you might pay for a current, frontline model, it is a mere pittance.

Not familiar with the D600 specs but I'm sure that it will do everything you need for as long as any 1.5 to 2k laptop would.

BTW, where did you get it from??

Ebay, here is the specs. I actually did buy the toshiba from tiger direct and guess what, the sound card was shot and there was a short going to the screen. I just sent it back and got my money back. Rather painless but a waste of my time and twenty bucks in shipping.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=6858743660&sspagename=ADME:B:BCB:MT:11

PS, I did the cdrw/dvd upgrade after the purchase.

I bought a Toshiba in Jan 06 and the cd/dvd did not work. Support people hard to understand talk with a funny accent. You have to send the unit to the for repair. Go with a Dell.

Let us know when you get it Pointer. My seller would not accept paypal so I had to mail a cashiers check. One week to NY and one week back so I don't expect to see mine till late next week.

Boomer,

We got it on tuesday. It works great and I am happy with this one. It really only took about 3 days out of New Jersey.

Re: Need help with picking out a laptop for home use.

Pointer,
$4000 seems like an awful lot. I hate to promote my own company here but maybe I can save you some money. My company website on ebay is offleaseauction.com, we sell reclaimed used equipment, we sometimes have laptops on the web site. One note, the only tests run on the PC's are a power up test. The PC's have the hard drives wiped clean and the PC does not come with the operating system or Windows Office, you must accquire and install them or have a friend install the software. I beleive we have a couple of Toshibas on our web site right now for just a couple hundred dollars plus a few dollars for shipping. Unlike some ebay vendors my company has 99.4% customer satifaction rating. We always strive to make the transaction right. Sorry guys if this post seems self serving, but just trying to help Pointer out.

Sorry guys of the errant post, I just noticed Pointer's prior post where he has already purchased a pC. I'll try to be more attentive in the future.
