The SEI drive will bolt on with no problems. Be sure to tell them what you have so you get the correct ratio AND the correct length of drive shaft.

Whether the used set up you posted is worth it or not... who knows? But it does have the wrong ratio. Doubt you would be able to make up for it with a prop.

Do yourself a BIG favor, go to the Adults Only sticky and get the manual for your setup.

Wow, I wasn't expecting the factory manual! This is way better than the chilton one I bought! Sweet!

Found that I do need to put in forward to remove drive, but still can't find if it's push or pull on the cable. Does Anyone know?

True, I doubt a prop change would make up for it too, but I will need a new prop anyway! haha

I was wondering if one; I would be able to use everything beside the gear housing (pump, transom assembly, limit switches..) and two; could I change the gears to use that new casing. I'm pretty sure that lower would just bolt on my upper.

If memory serves, you push the cable to go into forward - pull for reverse.

To double check, look underneath - the "shoe" needs to be pointing straight fore and aft in order for the outdrive to be removed.

By rights, your '78 should have an MR/Alpha drive and not the type I drive and you should have center rise manifolds...but the end risers were remarkably reliable. One good thing, those tilt/trim rams are completely rebuildable.

Also, too bad you live on the other side of the country. I have a used 355 ci engine/transom assm and MR/Alpha drive I'd sell together for $500.

He has an R drive.

To get it in FWD gear, cut your shift cable with some dikes. Undo the trim rams, have somebody you trust pull the drive up, then poke your head up under and turn the shift shoe with some pliers so the shift lever points straingt to the bow of the boat.
Depending on how bad your cable is rusted together, it may be easier to lift the drive up and cut the cable just after the bellow inside of the gimbal assembly.
