Re: need help with shifting problem

Does it make a horrible grinding and jumping sound? Or is it more like slipping rather than actually coming out of gear? It would be very unusual for one of those motors to actually come out of gear and if it did it would make that horrible grinding noise, and probably wouldn't have reverse or neutral either.

I suspect you have the slipping condition instead. That is the propeller hub slipping. The cure is to take or send the propeller to a prop shop and they can re-hub it. Or, just get a new propeller.

And be very glad it's the just the prop and not actually coming out of gear, which would really cost you big bucks!!

if it feel like the clutch slipping, on a standard transmission car. the engine running faster than the movement. you have a spun prop. the prop has a center hub on the prop shaft, a rubber bushing an the outer hub of the prop. the rubber bushing has worn out, and needs replacing. in this picture you can see what i'm saying. No you can't do it yourself. clik picture to enlarge.

with a permanet marker draw a line across the 2 sections of the hub. then give it a spin on the water. if they are still line up it's not the prop. but it sounds like it's the lower unit problem.

The terrible grinding sound means the clutch dog and forward gear are not engaging all the way, or if they are engaged they are so worn out that they won't stay engaged. Fairly unusual on that motor because they have a spring and a reverse bevel that holds them together.

At any rate, the gearcase has to come apart for inspection and repair if that's the case.

Re: need help with shifting problem

Ok, here's the deal. That motor is supposed to default into forward gear when something is not working. Look in your manual and you will see an oil pump in the forward nose of the gearcase. There is a piston in that oil pump that slides back and forth under hydraulic pressure as valved by the solenoids. Dirt, metal shavings, and grit can make that piston get stuck. That may be your problem.

OR, you can have other severe damage, including but not limited to the clutch dog. Such severe damage will cause metal shavings, which puts us right back to the possible stuck piston question. It's all related.

There is only one way to determine what is wrong with your lower unit. It has to come apart for inspection and repair. There is no other way.

BTW, remember way back up the thread I said that if you have damage in the lower unit you probably wouldn't have neutral or reverse either? Now you just said that you don't have reverse. I know whereof I speak.

120 psi in all cylinders is good.

Question for F_R. If the wrong oil were used in this unit, what would the symptoms be?

Sluggish shifting I suppose. I've never actually tried it. Do you suppose that is the problem here????
