Re: Need help with transom repair w/pics

Ok, I have a question ... when I flip the boat back over I will be starting the sole next so do I have to make a cradle to hold the hull in place? If not I will be doing it on the trailer. I did not remove the cap I just cut it near the transom. With the cap still in place ... do I still need to put it on a cradle?

I think the Traile will support it just fine.

I am kind of idle waiting for an order of resin to come so I started stripping my control box. It had a lot of chips on it so I decided to paint it. I am using a stripper called "Citristrip" which I saw someone using in another thread and it seems to be working pretty good. It has no strong fumes and it smells like oranges.

Well, the resin came last night and I have all but the last layer on the keel. I need to get some wax for the final layer and then I can flip her back over. Everything looks good so far.

Finally delivered the new steering system. Not even thinking about that yet.

Also finished the control box:

And the mailman delivered the emblems from Mark42:

Things are moving right along.

Wow, now that control box looks brand spankin' new. Is this citristrip on the shelf at Lowes or HD? I'm thinking my 79 Johnson OB should look so good. Um . . . primer and krylon to finish? I think these small projects deserve a little attention to the details. Well done Jon.

Thanks Hydra, and yes the Citristrip is on the shelf at Lowes. Sometimes its nice to take a break from the fiberglass and work on these little things that need done.

This is what I used on the control box after stripping it:

I need to fill in some spots on the bottom of the fiberglass hull both above and below the water line to prepare it for paint . Can someone suggest a good filler to use on this?

I'd add some finely chopped fibers too. Or tear up some scrap CSM into tiny hairy pieces and mix it in. This will give a little extra strength.

So, am I mixing up something like a PB mix?

I hope I'm not to late. I have told you wrong. To make Fairing compound you use Microballons NOT cabosil. I makes it easier to sand. I gave you the PB mix. My BAD!!! Sorry.

I need to add one last layer of CSM to the keel and I went out and sanded it a little today and I noticed that it has some low spots along the side of the keel on the hull. I marked them in red in the photo. Do I need to fill these in now before the last layer is put on or do I wait until all the layers are done? Fill them in, sand it and paint it.

Hey Jon,
If it were me, I'd finish all the glass work first. Once completed, you can fair everything in then.
