1989 DT85 suzuki, Need to know if anyone would know how to get the shift rod (clutch) back into the lower unit, took loose at roll pins during water pump installation. Found picture showing ballbearing and spring that has to slide into bottom portion of shift rod. Can't seem to make that happen. Thanks in advance to anyone with any info, HOPING LOWER UNIT DOESN'T HAVE TO COME APART.

Re: Need help

I believe there is a ball bearing and spring that sit at the end of the rod. i had mine off and it was a bear to get back on. Do you have a manual? Try doing a board search of your problem and see if you can find something that may help. Good Luck!

Re: Need help

I believe you will find on these older motors you have to pull the prop shaft out to reinsert the shift connection rod.

Mine is a DT50 1983, and it is built this way. I have it apart and it was not to bad.

Be sure to replace all the LE seals if this turns out to be the case for your motor.

Good luck
