Rebuilding 1997 Yamaha 150HP 2 stroke S150TXRV powerhead.
( Click here to view blog with pictures )

Book makes no mention of using a threadlocker on any threads. Do any bolts on the PH need thread locker and if so, which bolts and what brand and flavor of threadlocker?

Re: Need I Use Thread Locker?

About a year and a half back, I tried to buy the OEM manual. I was told by Yamaha that they were not made anymore. I think I searched Ebay...nothing. I purchased Clymer instead.

I need to make a correction to the orig post. Book does state to apply Loctite 572 to the water jackets and exhaust covers and plates. Nothing about rodbolts, or crankcase halfs, etc...

contact another dealer, that manual is still in print.
if nothing else they can copy a page.
I dont have it here in front of me. but I dont think loctite 517 is called for anyplace but the crankcase halves.
I prefer perfect seal on the covers instead of 572 and pipe sealant on the bolts.

Re: Need I Use Thread Locker?

OK thank you and while we are on the subject of sealing mating surfaces I have a conflict I need to resolve; I've got someone telling me to put all gaskets on DRY meaning no liquid sealer (except the block halves which have no gasket).

Am I understanding you correctly RB that you prefer Perfect Seal on the water jackets, & Exhaust cover mating surfaces? Further, should I apply this to heads and intake also and forget about dry-only? Seems to me I would want to put sealer on ALL the mating surfaces.

Order being: apply sealer to mating surface A, place gasket on top, apply sealer to mating surface B, join parts (no lateral movement), apply piipe sealant to bolts, torque bolts in special sequence, torque second time.

pls confirm. thanks.

Re: Need I Use Thread Locker?

I used to do them all dry, after the EPA and OSHA got into the picture and the gasket material itself changed,I started having to use the perfect seal on the the exhaust plates to be sure of a good seal. If you use aftermarket head gaskets, I would also use it on the head gaskets.
I have never had to use it on the intake side. 517 for the block halves and tighten everything in the proper sequence to proper torque. Pipe sealer to bolts is a necessity on motors exposed to saltwater.

Thanks Ray.

I assume to be coating both mating surfaces with perfect seal, and generous application of pipe sealer on all bolts.

What about rodbolts, are we going still with pipe sealer or are we doing some flavor of Loctite there?

thank ya

Re: Need I Use Thread Locker?

Have you guys ever heard of "Pro Seal Gasket Eliminator", "Manufactured by Loctite Corp for Pro Marine Parts, Bradenton Fl" Part # GS1.

I was given this and told to use it on the crank halves. Do I chuck it and go with Loctite 517 for block halves?

I cannot find Loctite 517 or Perfect Seal ..where do I get these products?

thanks.
