I bought a 1990 Ski Supreme with a Commander 351 engine. Can't seem to find any info on the web about the engine other than an address for the company. Anyone know anything about them and possibly where to pick up a repair manual? Thanks.

Ayuh,....

Commander is a small engine marinizer, who obviously used Fords in 1990...

Your motor is a 351W motor, which is used by Nobody now a days...
Consequently,... Parts are abit of an Issue to find...

If you found a link or contact Info for Commander,....
I suggest you start there for more Info,+ Service Manuals.....

Btw,...
Welcome Aboard......:)

Re: Need info on Commander engines

Commander went belly up about that time. They were based out of Miami and used the Ford 302, 351 and 460. They were special in that they all used stainless steel exhaust manifolds. Look pretty but after a few years they usually began to leak around the welds. We were a dealer for them until they went under. I had order a pair of 460's for a repower toward the end and almost got caught holding the bag being I paid for them before receiving them. I think they over stretched themselves trying to get into the diesel and sterndrive market. At the Miami Boatshow around that time, they demostrated an outdrive that was butt ugly. But it would pivot 180 degrees. So you could spin a boat around in its own length. Never made it to market and they closed the door shortly after that.

Ken how did they do the 180 turn with the drive?

Was it like a stringer using a gear? With a central pivot point?

How was it raised?

Never saw a breakdown on the drive but it was built in Sweden. Looked simular to an older Volvo in that it was skinny and long. They said at that time they were going to design a outer cover that would make it more visual apealing to customers. I think it was a unit that was already produced in Sweden for the commercial market but I really don't know how they achieved the 90 degree angle to the side.

that would be pretty handy. the 2 redeeming features of a stringer are how sharp it will turn and how high it will raise.sure is a lot easer to change a prop than the merc I have now.
