Need Information on Sears Gamefisher

I have what seems to be a late 80's early 90's Sears Gamefisher 5.0 hp outboard. I don't have any numbers that I can pull off of it to help identify what I have, as the ink has worn away on the inside of the cowling where the I.D. plate is. I was told it was an early 90's, yet I would like to verify. All the info I have is its a one cylinder, 5 horse, no reverse, and its black, red and white. I need to rebuild the carb as for some odd reason it likes to spit fuel of it somewhere while running... Any info would be great.

Without the numbers, it's a little hard to date. Is it an aircooled model? You can tell by looking for fins on the cylinder.

If so, then it's a little easier to date. Also, if you have a photo, that would be useful.

There are fins, and that tipped me off to it being aircooled, but I don't wanna go ruining the water pump and housing if it had one.

Yeah, it has a water-cooled exhaust. Sears has parts for it, but you do have to identify the model before you can order them.

www3.sears.com

But, without a model number, you can't go anywhere.

You say 80's to 90's. Could be. Could also be 70s.

go to discount-marine-parts.com.

Click on Sears in the outboard dropdown list, then follow the links to see a list of engines. You should be able to narrow it down, and they list model numbers.

From there, you can go to the sears site and plug in those numbers, look at the diagrams, and probably figure out what your model is.

I'll post another message.

Re: Need Information on Sears Gamefisher

Since your motor is air-cooled, it's almost certainly an Eska-based one. Sears sold 5hp models from the 60s through part of the 80s. The engines were built by tecumseh, and had Tillotson carburetors.

If you look at the engine, there may be a tag there attached to one of the bolts. The number from that tag is the engine model number, and that will lead you to a narrowed list of model numbers on the site I mentioned in the previous message.

There may also be a carburetor number on the carburetor, and that might help as well, if you need a carb kit.

By looking at the sears site listed in the previous message, and comparing the parts diagrams, you should be able to narrow the year down pretty closely.

Good news is that if you can get close, it will be good enough. There weren't many model year changes during that period, and impellers and carb kits are pretty standard for any of them that have the same engine model number (tag on engine).

The cowlings changed, too, and there are pictures of those in the parts diagrams.

I hope that helps. If you just need a carb kit, pull your carb and take it to a small engine repair shop. They should be able to fix you up, or they'll even rebuild your carb for you, for a fee.

Re: Need Information on Sears Gamefisher

I picked back up on this motor and I have a little more information to see if I can get a year and model number for this outboard. I've got a number that came off the transom bracket which is, 78004096. I also have a number and make of the carburetor which is made by Lauson-Power Products out of Crafton, Wisconsin also the carb has 1284 stamped on it. I'll add some pictures as well too.

That's an oddball, for sure. I can't find any 780 model numbers for Sears Gamefisher outboards at all. Please take another look at the number. The one you gave doesn't produce any results at the Sears site.

That doesn't mean it's incorrect...it just means that Sears doesn't know it exists. As far as I know, they never had an outboard with a Lauson engine. Again, that doesn't mean it didn't happen. It could have been some one-shot deal Sears did, and now the don't remember they did it. Sears doesn't really care about its outboard motors any more. They have some parts still in stock, and will sell them to you if they have them, but thats about it.

Tecumseh bought Lauson in 1956, so that's even more puzzling, since your outboard looks like one of the later Gamefisher models. You have an oddball outboard, so you're in for an adventure.

The carb looks like a typical Tillotson, as used on the Tecumseh engines used in most of the Gamefisher models. That means that parts may be available.

You might try going to www.certifiedpartscorp.com and calling the phone number there. They bought all of the Eska parts from the company when it folded, lo these many years ago. If anyone can suss this out, they can.

Best of luck!
