Working on my 1958 Johnson Super Seahorse 35hp RDSL-20

This motor has what is called a "fuel saver control." According to this CD manual I have, to set this you must have the throttle at full and the spark at full advance. I got that part. There is a collar/set screw that slides up the linkage arm. It says to slide that back to the pivot on the linkage, and tighten it there. No problem. But ... The instructions make no mention of the butterfly in the carb. If I set this up the way it says, the butterfly never opens. This can't be right. In a previous illustration it shows the thing set up with the butterfly at about 45 degrees. It looks to me as if I should hold the butterfly in the open position before I adjust that set screw... ??? In fact, if the butterfly is set half open like in the picture, wouldn't that directly cut the throttle back to half? Any advice is appreciated.
Tom

Ok, this is a bit of a guessing game.
The idea is to put that collar screw in a place where the throttle will kick the butterfly all the way down when you turn the accellerator all the way open, because it takes over where the cam follower leaves off. This place should be between 2 3/8 and 2 1/2 inches from the end of the rod it sits on.(the end that is away from the carburator). You can see and hear if it is in the right spot, when you disconnect your remote and you manually open your throttle. The throttle part that slides over the rod will come forward and touch the little collar and push the rod forward. You should hear a click now from the carburetor, because the butterfly was pushed over a dead point and now it is wide open.
Good luck.

Thanks rolmops,
I think I have it set now... At least it looks like everything is working. I won't know for sure until I actually get this motor running again. I thought that would be today but I'm still having starter troubles and I refuse to pull that rope unless I'm stuck in the middle of a huge lake. lol
Tom
