A few weeks ago I posted about a '61 Merc 60, 6hp ser# 1410391 that I picked up to play with as I like to restore/rebuild an outboard or two over the summer. I cleaned the carb as the only kit I ran across was $80 and she fired right up! I then ordered a new impeller and upper and lower oil seals for the water-pump housing as the looked like they were leaking. The parts came in today and I got right on it. While I had it apart, I pulled the plugs on the LU to put in fresh lube and when I turned it over to drain the old I got about 1/4 cup of clear water, obviously because it had been sitting for awhile and had separated from the oil. I figured OK I needed to replace the seals anyway, but then I noticed lube leaking out of the shift-shaft seal(great). I tried to give it a little wiggle to see if it was loose and the %$&^@ shaft came right out of the LU. Tomorrow I have to pick up my slide-hammer from my buddy so I can pull the bearing carrier and see what the heck fell off in there. Seems like my little quick-fix is turning into a major project. I guess my question is this. I've worked on larger gear-cases with no problem but this tiny little thing looks like it could be a major PITA. I don't have a manual going this far back, so could anyone tell me where I might find the gearcase breakdown for this smaller older outboard without having to wait weeks? Thanks..
