need new water seperator?

I have a honda fuel water seperator. It has a screw on filter with a clear screw on bowl below it with a valve below that for draining. Is it necessary to replace the filter every year, or can I just open the spiggot to drain out what water might be there? I installed this my self so there is no maintance schedule to follow. I was also wondering why that bowl is clear, to see water? It looks like all gas to me.

I have always been given fairly vague advice on this (Mine is a RAcor, maybe the same set up though - spin on cannister with clear drain bowl at bottom). Basically I've been told that the thing doesn't need to be changed much. I go ahead and change it every year and drain it (or at least check for water) nearly every time I use the motor. I'm interested to see the answers you get, because like I said, I'm not really comfortable with any guidelines I've ever received.

Water seperator/filters will only effectively trap condensation, it's useless if you get a belly full of water from the bowser - it will fill very quickly and contaminate upstream of the filter. The clear bowl will alert you to condensation (it's normal, don't worry). <br /><br />The filter is a different story, it traps particles, it should be replaced as part of a maintenance schedule and that would depend on usage. I change mine every 100 hrs and I keep a spare onboard.<br /><br />Aldo
