looking at a couple of used boats, 2000 starcraft 1710 gt, and 2002 glastron sx 175, which is a better family boat?

Im familiar with that type of glastron. . Its a lot of boat for 17 feet and its a great family boat. The starcraft seems more crowded to me.. but it ultimately depends on what your gonna be doing with it

Depends on the intended use. When I bought my boat I looked for a one fits all boat to fish, ski, cruise, and hold lots of people.No boat can do it all without a sacrafice somewhere. I realy wanted a center console but it didnt fit the bill so bowrider here I came. Go to a boat show and have the whole family get in to see how crowded she is. Imagine being in there for a few hours (believe me they shrink). Also go ride with a few buddies and learn what you like best. As long as it gets you on the water it will be fun and you can always upgrade without loosing too much money if your buying used.
Starcraft = fishing mostly
Glastron = ski, swim, tube.

my novice observations are the starcraft has a much more sloped deadrise than the glastron I don't know what effect that will have on handling or stability, and I thought I read that the glastron has no wood in the stucture to rot, does the starcraft use the same process with their fiberglass hull?

I think either would be a good starting point. They are both well made, respected boats. The only thing I'll add is 17' is on the small side for family. Our last boat was a 17.5 and it was cramped with 4 ppl onboard. Not trying to talk you out of it - I am extremely glad we started with the one we did, as it was easy to tow, launch, manuver, etc. We had a blast with it. Just be aware that the bug will probably bite eventually for a bigger boat (then again, even if you start out with a 30 footer, the bug will still bite for a 36 footer eventually!). If you can buy it at a good deal, you can make money after a couple of years and upgrade (we bought ours for $4500, used it for 4 years, and sold it for $5000). Good luck and happy hunting.
