I found this guy off scream and fly that makes real cool light weight aluminum shifters $100+ shipping. Only thing is they are for universal cables, he will special make one for merc/OMC cables for another $50.

I've got a brand new cable hooked to my 77' crossflow Johnson 140.

What's the difference? Can I adapt my cable to work with the universal? Or in the long run is it just better to buy the $150 one that fits what I have?

Thanks.

See if this helps...... (I never order a cable until I have the old one out so I can physically see the ends ;)) Johnson Control Cables - iboats

Adapting the OMC to universal cables is probably impossible and DEFINITELY not worth the time and aggravation necessary if it is possible at all. Oh, ANYTHING is possible if you throw cubic money at it but we all are not rich. Spend the extra 50 to get the OMC control box.

Re: Need schooling on control cables.

So the guy says the universal one works with my cable. I'm gonna order it and see.

I'm not talking about a control box- just a shifter.

I really don't see how it can be impossible though. It's a cable- I mean literally it's just a cable in a sheath that an end that gets clamped onto to connector to the control box. How can there not be a simple way to convert to to another style end? The sheath retaining is not an issue, because of the way it clamps in the shifter.

Which brings up the question- Why not buy a new universal cable and an end to fit the motor? It just slides over a threaded stud with a nylock nut on it.

Oooooh. So I can get a new extreme 3300 cable and the CA27321P ends for a couple bucks more than spending the $50 on a specific OMC/Merc shifter AND I will already have the end for the throttle on the motor side since I need a new cable for the hot foot.

Good thing I didn't order the hot foot from Bob's yet. I'll have to see how this works out.

Don't see any reason not to spend $20 more and have the boat setup to take whatever motor I throw at it.

Thanks BobVT it took a bit and looking at your post about six times to think it through.

Got a link to the control shifter? PM it to me....I am on scream and fly too but rarely go there. What motor are you running? That is pretty close to the Sidewinder I am doing.

Member named RowBoat in Canada is making these. I'm PM'ing you his contact info. $130 shipping, pay pal etc.

Yeah I think when i was looking up the history of my boat Sidewinder was in the mix, I'm not sure which way to be honest anymore. I think it's a checkmate running surface and sidewinder was the same mold or something. I know there was a reason years ago that I joined the sidewinder forum. Although there is much going on there every time I check.

Dig your sidewinder! Cool looking knees. I made mine out of plywood 1/2'" and doubled up to 1" where yours are. They tie not just the transom to the sole, but also connect to the bottom and slope of the splash well, top of the deck/cap and the wood across the very back of the cockpit area. It's all one solid cage back there. Super strong, but still slightly less weight then stock.
