I live in older home (built in the early 40's). One of the rooms which is 12 x 12 only has one very small closet which is part of a stairwell. At some point I would like to add some closet space in there and wondered if anyone has every encountered this and may have some additional ideas. I have a few in my head such as a corner built in, free standing armoir ect.

This closet was built in a house we stayed in that didn't have closets originally.

Re: Need some closet ideas for an old house

We recently installed a closet organization system in our walk in. Even in a smaller closet you can really make better use of the space if it's organized well. We now have 2 rows of hangers, a shoe rack, a row of wire shelves with jumbo pull out baskets, and some other goodies. Granted my closet is really big to begin with but look into the closet organizers and see if they will give you more "usable space". Lowes has Rubbermaid brand I believe.

I like the looks of that and it looks like it will fit the old decor. I have priced some of the warddrobes and think I could frame on it for a lot cheaper.

A hand full of 2x4's and some 1/2" sheetrock and you can have a closet :)

That's my intial thoughts and may be what I do. The windows in the room pose some obstacles but I think I can work around that and make it look good. But then again it's my teenage daughters room so my mind may change.

Build the closet over the windows, closing them off. Then she can't be sneaking out the window in the middle of the night ... This might be your safest and best alternative!;)

Re: Need some closet ideas for an old house

We lived in Europe for a number of years, and most houses do not have built-in closets. Armoirs or wardrobes were our only option. They worked for our purposes, but we thought they were unattractive and looked too "out of place". If you're looking for a long-term solution, something that's going to be there for years and years, I'd spend the time and build my own built-in closets with 2x4s and sheetrock.

The problem with 2x4's and drywall is you lose a lot of space.

This is of course more important in smaller rooms.

You've got 3 1/2" plus (1/2" x 2) = 4 1/2" of wasted space.
