We have rattle snakes but only in southern MN in bluff country. I've hunted and fished all my life and I've never seen a snake other than a garter, which of course is harmless. For me, swimming venomous snakes would be a deal breaker.

Do not use the fire hose, for some reason that synthetic fire hose will rot and is one of the biggest pains to clean up. Stuff will also start growing out of it, I have seen little branches and weeds come out of fire hose.

The marina I work at uses small airplane tires. We nail a heavy black mesh net and put the tires in it. Then wrap the cloth around the tires. The pilots at our small airport know we will take them. The tires are the softest tires around and FREE for the asking.
