well i know this guy that does good work on outboard motors for a reasonable price. so about a month ago i take two of my outboards to the guy. one is a 97, 25 horse evinrude. had a stripped out bolt which holds the starter in place. the other one is a early 60s 51/2 horse evinrude. this motor has been sitting for a few years and i just never could get it running right. well when i dropped off both motors the guy tells me "dont ever get rid of that gas tank for the older motor because they dont make them anymore. i saw one at a rummage sale a while ago for 130 bucks." its the old kind with a fuel line and a air line. well any way he calls me last night and says he is done with the 25 horse tells me what i owe him and its very reasonable. then he tells me the older motor needs alot of work roughly 500 dollars worth. i said okay forget it i dont want to put that much into it. then he says i have a little over 2 hours into it so it will cost you 100 bucks. but if you want i will keep the motor parts in exchange for the 100 dollars. well i figured okay thats reasonble too. then says could you please drop off the tank too. now the guy just told me a month ago that tank was worth 130 bucks. what should i do pay the guy 100 bucks and keep the motor and tank. or give him the tank and motor? would i be out of line to ask him to take a little more off the cost of fixing the 25 horse in exchange for the tank and old motor? and what would be reasonable to ask for? i was thinking 35 dollars off the price.

Pay him the $100.

Post your troubles with the engine on the JohnnyRude Troubles Forum.

Those guys can fix anything that could be wrong, and do it over the internet.

Moving to Outboard Non-repair.

Agree with JB. But I do think the guy is trying to pull a fast one to get his hands on the complete motor.

Ask him exactly what he did in the two hours that did not yeild any results so you can pick it up from there. If your paying him, he should itemize it on a bill for you.

Pay him and don't go back.

Mark.

Re: need some opinions please

the only draw back to the 5.5 is you have to remove the powerhead to change the water pump. that can get involved.
but get a detailed report of what he found wrong and let us know. 500 dollars will buy you about 7 hours labor with no parts
3 broken screws in the powerhead coupled with one or two on the lower unit and toss in a broken shift rod when you try to dissconnect it will eat up 3 or 4 of them.
so post what he found wrong in the jonny rude section and lets have a go at it :)

well what he told me so far is that it needs a whole new coil system. and the bearing in the lower unit is seized. and there may be some damage to the gears too. i am going to pick up the motors either sat or monday depending on when i can get free. will know more then. i am wondering how hard it will be to get parts. i am pretty sure the motor is a 1965. when i get the motor back i am guessing it will still be dismantled

If you have a twin-line tank it is not a '65, Fishkpr.

Give us the model number and we can tell you the exact year model.

Parts are still easily available for most JohnnyRudes of that period.

An early 60s 5 1/2 horse motor, running good and cosmetically good, fetches around 2-300 dollars. I would not spend more money to fix it that I could to replace the whole thing with another. Parts are easy and relatively cheap to get for it, and it is pretty easy to work on. If you are handy, you could get the parts and the fine folks on this site can get you through the hard part. I see 2 line tanks in good shape go for a lot less than 130 bones. I bought my latest outboard, a 57 Johnson 5 1/2 for 65 bones, including a near perfect 2 line tank. I put new coils in it and slapped a paint job on it and it is now good to go.
