Since the trim up limiter/trim gauge sending units wires are damaged, now is the best/recommended time to change them out while everything is apart as they can be pretty difficult to try and change with everything installed. mercruiser recommends replacement vs repair of the wires in that area. They don't help with the stop down only while trimming the drive up/out to a certain angle then stopping in and around the halfway up mark to avoid over trimming while underway. Then you'd use the trailer button to override the trim up limit switch to raise the drive the rest of the way up. Have you been able to locate the new parts needed on your parts catalog?

Just read that the limit switch is on the port side, where mine with the stripped wires is on the starboard.

Fun Times, yes... I found the parts. Took a bit to find the bulkhead fitting (search oil) and it came right up. Thank you for asking.

I'm new to the I/O ownership world and that limit switch makes a lot of sense... i.e, ujoints going kaput due to over trimming in shallow water.
