My point is to do what the "Factory Manual" says to do. Haynes and Clymer manuals are notorious for suggestuing shortcuts that don't work. If the Factory manual says to use a chain or strap wrench so be it but it will probably say to use a holding fixture.

So Bruce what are you going to do when the chain wrench destroys the serpentine belt groves as every thing gets tight? You have never worked in a real shop have you.

Remove the spark plug from the cylinder closest to that end of the crankshaft. bring the piston toward TDC and feed a sufficient length of clean rope into the cylinder to 'lock' the piston from moving past TDC while you loosen/tighten the pully nut/bolt. works best if you have piston on the compression/power stroke transition but intake/exhaust overlap shouldn't be a problem with having the valves open that little bit.

I use that method all the time to hold the crankshaft on small 2/4 stroke engines to remove the flywheels or drive sprockets on chainsaws.

omg! this is genius!:D this is so much easier than using a screw driver for leverage! well im on my little 10hp outboard :D except i only torque it to about 45-50foot pounds! my 35hp i have to torque to 65-70 foot pounds! that one i used my friend to hold the flywheel. he was to weak so i had to.:p

Maybe you should read my post again. I said the "Factory Manual" probably says to use a holding fixture. I would never use a chain wrench AND I WOULD DEFINITELY NOT USE AN IMPACT WRENCH!!!!

Re: Need Strap or Chain Wrench

how would you torque 300 foot pounds???
With a 6 foot pipe going over the Craftsman breaker bar.

Here is an example of a factory manual showing the holding fixture and the torque specs for a crankshaft bolt. This is a Lexus.

The bolt on the engine in question may be less. On other engines I have worked on, I have fabricated my own holding fixture by welding two bars in an "L" and drilled holes for bolts that thread into the crankshaft pulley. I have around 6 of these I have made for various cars I have changed timing belts on.

Your right tightening is a different story. If you take off the pulleys off the harmonic balancer and bolt a long plate to it and rest it against the frame you then can then torque it down. A manual will show you what it looks like.

The best way to get it off and on is with a impact wrench. Even if you have to take the rad out.

Did you read my reply.

As of using an impact wrench that's my personal way of doing it becouse I have never seen a harmonic balancer bolt come loose that was put on tight with a impact. Most impacts will easily tighten to 300 foot pounds.

If you are using a 6 foot pipe on a braker bar that's quite the torque wrench you are using.

If you pull on it with 50lbs force it is. Hey, you are talking to an engineer here!
