Re: Need suggestions/help with hardwood flooring project.

Just a quick update.... The flooring should be here tomorrow. 28 boxes that I have to unload and haul to the house on my own.... Got the tractor fueled up and the small 4x4 foot yard trailer dug out of the snow and checked tire pressure, lubed the axles and hacked out the ice from the bed. Plan is to load the trailer from the truck down at the street, then haul it up to the house and unload into the garage and/or house (depending on how tired I get). That means about 4 or 5 trips. Its about 140 feet from the street to the garage door, and I don't feel like carrying these boxes one at a time. :)

If the temps drop down into the teens or below, the tractor battery just can't handle those temps. Hopefully it will be in the high 20's or better when the truck arrives tomorrow. If the tractor won't start, will get one of the boat batteries stored in the basement (fully charged) and a set of jumper cables and fire the old machine up.

DOH! Just checked the weather for tomorrow........ "Partly cloudy. High 28F. Winds WSW at 10 to 20 mph". Cold and windy. Going to suck working outside.

These boxes of flooring weigh about 60 lbs a piece. Any suggestions for off loading?

a couple of points you may already know: don't nail the toe moulding to the floor; nail it to the baseboard

If you have radiators let that wood sit inside, spead out, a long long time.

You will tend to use the best (longest) boards in the middle--but for many rooms, the middle is always covered with a carpet. Likewise, you may know that a sofa or large piece of furniture will always be in a certain place. Consider those places for the shorties. as someone said, the place where you first get the long look is the most important.

Boy this is very slow going. Guys who install hard wood flooring definitely earn their pay. I'm very sore, but actually getting faster at it. Just spending less time due to sore muscles! There is Ash in the family room thats been in a few years now, and looks very good. This floor is by Armstrong/Bruce, and changes its look depending on the lighting. In the day light, its fairly even in color, with a few darker pieces. At night under florescent lights the dark pieces really stand out.

Here is how much I have got done in about 9 hours spread out over 3 days:

A closeup of the Ash. This is just off the front foyer where a large area of the floor will be seen and not covered, so I used mostly long clear pieces. But still mixed in some darker pieces. Putting more of the longer pieces along the sides of the room, as a diningroom table tends to cover the center of the room. This room is 14x14 '.

And this is the transition piece made where the floor meets tile. This was made from a piece of flooring and was cut down on the table saw. Nothing pre-made would fit right without cutting, so I made this piece instead. Will have to stain and clear coat the cut edge.

Using a Bostitch flooring nailer borrowed from a friend. And the Harbor Freight compressor is performing very well. Very happy with it so far.
