Hi - I have a 1990 Alpha I Generation II 4.3L Mercruiser. I am the original owner. It has a bad gimble bellows, gimble bearing, and engine coupler.

I have a very complete home shop, but no Mercury speciality tools except for the engine alignment tool. I have the Mercruiser FACTORY manuals. Please help with the following questions:

1. As I have to replace the gimble bellows and gimble bearing, can I replace the engine coupler WITHOUT pulling the engine?

2. I have slide hammers, three jaw internal pullers, crains, etc. Are any other Mecruiser speciality tools a must?

3. I've noted no other failures except the above. However, what should be replaced when I'm in there (like exhaust bellows, shift bellows, etc).

4. Any tips to help pulling the transom assembly apart? Maybe a web site? I sure hate to drill and tap out the sides of the lower unit and would like to avoid that. Once I read that in the manuals - well, let's just say I'm dissapointed in Mercruiser! It would be great if I could do the MINIMUM to replace the gimble bellows and the gimble bearing.

5. Is there kind of a all in one kit somewhere on the web for all the gaskets, bellows, etc? I've looked and couldn't find one.

Any other tips would be appreciated!

go ahead and replace all bellows. some replace lower shift cable (i didn't, wasn't giving trouble). you will need a 1/2 inch allen wrench (or socket) for the two star? head gimbal ring bolts on the sides and maybe a hollow cheater bar (strong pipe)as they are stuck in real good. the exhaust bellows is tricky because it is not round. loctite for the gimbal bolts. be sure to torque them in and tilt your unit and watch these bolts. you don't want the outdrive moving on the threads. the bolt heads should move. and don't expect your trim limit switch to work. usually the lamp cord wires are lost. maybe you will get lucky here. there are a lot of posts and websites with info (like above).

Thank You Fellows! Great advice and "how to." Efforts like you guys make really offer much more value than the factory manuals. The sum of the advice and tips plus the fact you have done this really, really helps.
