Hi I have come across a boat with frost damage its a 1990 4cylinder engine so i think its pre vortec. Looking for engine for it came across a mercruiser 140 would the block be the same been looking through the wonderfull web but have not got the answer i need. I think the heads were changed on a few occasions but can find no info on the blocks. I know these were not autmotive engines but were used in the industrial settings ,can you guys impart the knowledge i need please Mike

Yes but 1990 is a crossover year Where rear main seal changed to one piece seal and flywheel got larger To 14” .

easiest play is if you get the entire merc140.

some of the heads and manifolds are different as well, what exactly are you looking at swapping. If your engine was frozen i wouldnt mess around trying to re use the block head or manifold as they all likely had frost damage

Hi i wa looking to do a drop in but was not sure the 140 from earlier was in the same family of engines if they are a direct fit thats where i would go Mike

If you take a complete engine should be plug and play.

Hi thanks So the engine from the 80"s would just be rebadged as long as it fits the age is no problem i would be ok with doing a refresh on it rings white metal and valves and seals before instaling it well within my pay grade Mike

for the GM 3.0. the two choices are 1990 and older, or 1991 and newer.

I would look for a mid 90's bayliner with a rotten hull and get the 91 and newer motor with a 92 and newer drive.

OK making progress as we speak might have found a person with a engine from same time frame i will up date in a few days if things develop thanks Mike

Block changed for 1991 model year. Make sure block casting is same as yours

Hi A running engine has come to me its a mercruiser 120 the serial number is 6018254 other number cast into block is G ? 2379 and 2770 can anyone help identify this engine thanks Mike

A 120 is a 1990 and older 2.5 liter. The 3.0's baby brother
