Re: Need to change U joints on volvo/penta cobra SX outdrive??
The U joints have zirk fittings, placed at a 45 degree angle, too...

. It's definite BS the new ones don't. I'm nearly 100% positive the u joints are fine, reasons posted earlier. There was no evidence of water intrusion in the bellows. So, the inner race of gimbal bearing turns very, very smoothly with a barely perceptible bump at one point only (I know, what was that)...
...so, given that: 1) a boat mechanic friend said the sound described in the 1st post sounds u joint related, 2) two service guys at the VP shop said it sounds trim pump related, and 3) the gimbal bearing feels like it is still good (I understand it may not be)...
...I plan on finishing the list of items stated in earlier post, taking the boat back out, and listening carefully to detect if the sound has changed at all since I just regreased the gimbal bearing. If it changed or is absent it's probably the gimbal bearing and I'll have to repull the drive...

. If it's unchanged I'll have to start looking elsewhere for the cause (trim pump?)
Thanks for your help
