I recently purchased a boat and have had problems with the trim guage, the tachometer, and the volt meter guages not working. Prior to this boat, I have always had an I/O. I am now trying to familiarize myself with an outboard.

I started tracing back some of the wiring and came to a part in the OMC remote control unit that definately looks bad. I dont know for sure if this is the root of my problem, but maybe someone else can tell me what all the part might affect.

The part is inside the OMC control unit. If you open the control box, its a round black plastic box right above the key switch. The round lid is threaded and screws off to reveal inside. I can see a small coiled spring with melted plastic around it. It has a purple and a brown wire attached to the back of the box. The box appears to have been very hot as it is partially melted and burned on the inside of the box.

I dont find any sort of model or serial number on the OMC control to identify it. The melted part has some white letters stamped on the outside of the box, but they are slightly smeared and hard to read. It appears to read "MX3 V 48". I took some pictures of the control and the burned part I can email you if that would help, unless there is a way to post them with this message.

Can someone tell me what this part is, what it does, what it would affect, and how I go about replacing it without knowing the model number of the OMC control. Maybe theres a place to find the model number on the control?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

1987 four winns boat
1987 175hp evinrude outboard
1987 OMC remote control

Sounds to me like it might be the warning horn. Don't take my word for it tho, I'm no expert. If it is the warning horn it will probably cost you about $50 and better find out what burnt it out in the first place. I had to replace one on my old boat and it burnt out again the first time I took the boat out.

When you turn the key on does the horn sound for a short blast? If not I would say it is the warning horn.

The horn does not sound when the key is turned on.

I have not idea what would have caused it to burn out. Maybe someone has an idea on that as well?

You have the old style warning horn in that unit MK. It was buzzer type warning horn. You need to replace it with the new style tone style horn. If your VRO system is still operating, you need the horn to warn you of VRO problems as well as engine overheat. The replacement horn can be gotten at your local John/Rude dealer. PN 585992. Comes with instructions for installation. Costs about $55.

Thanks for the information. Any idea if this bad buzzer would prevent some guages from working?
