Need to know what parts to replace on water pump
(73 Johnson 85 HP Model ESL73)

Background :

With the help of Ezeke determined my boat was likely overheating( hot horn went off) due to water pump. He guided me in removing all bolts and shift cable. Shaft was hard to remove but ran motor at idle with bolts on (loose) and shaft loosened but later he suggested to use wood shims to fully lower. Worked Great! The shaft is off now. Yahoo!!!

Drive shaft is straight, little rusty at top. Teeth look good
Shift cable is straight, Placed tape at top so it does not swivel

Found the following and need your feedback

1.No seal around whole lower shaft.
There should be one there, correct?

2.Rubber Impeller was shredded on ends and looked like it was jammed. Ends severely bent or not there. Saw a lot of rubber rubbing on metal. A lot of rubber particles fell out of the impeller area
Impeller must be replaced and water pump seal, correct?

3.Ran a hose into the water lines going into heads to see if it was clogged. No clog, went out the other end. Looks like a copper line.

4.Place all purpose grease at top of drive shaft, right.

5.Anything else? Saw alot of black exhaust grit all over the place. They may be due
to having no seal.

Will likely get the parts from iboats.

No seal between lower unit and mid-section is correct.
Sounds like someone ran the motor out of the water and caused the impellor damage you describe. The only lubricant for the impellor and waterpump cup is water.

Clean the splines on the shaft and very lightly grease with Triple Guard. Do not grease the top of the drive shaft.

Do you have two water tubes (pipes from water pump)?

If you can, get the whole water pump kit, It includes the housing. OMC/BPR part #439140.

They sell a Sierra Kit 183384 here but it does not have the housing. If you think your housing is ok then use that.

There is a rather large tube (end is guess 3" X 6") running through the midsection. It functions like an exhaust pipe. It connects to the lower unit just behind the water bump. It requires a rubber seal. If the seal is not there you need one, or you will have black ash all over the midsection and lower unit. Glue or tape it in place when you put the gearcase back so it won't slip. Part 314937.

Use a bit of dish washing soap on the new impeller(and impeller cup) when you assemble the pump. It makes things go easier to go back together. The soap washes out when you first run it again. ;)

Re: Need to know what parts to replace on water pump

I do have two water tubes but they are short metal tubes near the housing that connect to tubes( copper ) in the midsection. If i look up into the midsection laying on the ground with my head up I see two rigid copper tubes(appear a little loose for some reason). No plastic tubing.
I will look into this tubing further since it seems loose

Thanks for all your help.

Re: Need to know what parts to replace on water pump

The two copper pipes are right. They are the water tubes.
They are supposed to have short rubber extensions that insert into the water pump.
They come loose when you drop the lower unit and stay where you see them.
Just make sure that the ends go back in the water pump when you reinstall the gearcase.

Water goes up one water tube to the water jacket and circulates around the cylinders. It stays there until the thermostat opens from heat. The rest of the water circulates through a bypass circuit and returns to the waterpump through the second water tube. Some of the excess discharges through the exhaust relief (two holes on the back of the mid section)

I have to buy the rubber extensions. They are not on the copper tubes and the connections on the housing are just stubs. The conection now is metal to metal. Where can I buy the rubber extensions so I can union the two.

Thanks

OMC/BRP Part #314765 at your J/E Dealer or Ishopmarine.com. These function as guides for the water tubes.
