Need to patch spots on PWC hull

I'm experienced at fiberglass repair, but not so knowledgable on the best paint and clear coats to use on a PWC hull. I want the paint to last like it was from the manufacturer. What brands of paint and clear coat should I look for?

your hull is vynalester resin and gellcoat....

i suggest you use VE resin and gellcoat......

i have seen too many repair of pwc that have failed because an auto body guy was told to do the repair...bondo and paint every time....lol.( i have nothing aginst auto body guys or their service) but any kind of boat is not a car. they live in a hurricane and hit the dock every day ......your chevy cant take a shopping cart to the side never mind a dock at 5 mph.....a boat can.

paint and cc on a hull (under the waterline...hence hull) is not recommended.

gellcoat is...however......matching the gellcoat is not like matching paint....you can get close....but not bang on......you must order the factory gell.....even then....this is usually a shade off. matching gellcoat is a dark art.....and i have seen 40 year veterans mess up.

what color are you mixing?.....black? white?....post pics and we can and will help !

Thanks oops! And LONG TIME speaking and taking advice from you!!! I'm saddened to see Tashasdaddy is no longer with us. He helped me many times as well. RIP my online advice mentor/friend

OK... VE resing and clear coat it will be. The color is white for 97 Yam GP760. Some person took a black plastic/rubber sort-of spray and tried to remedy the gash halfway under the nose. Then they thought they would get creative with it and run that black s**t right up and over the nose to the top lid. Oh well, another fix-it job for the F-Okie! I bought it due to the condition of the rest of the craft anyway knowing I would eventually get it looking right. The gash isn't major but enough for a prev owner to think that this black stuff would fix it :facepalm: They used a rattle can white paint to touch off the rest of their "hull fix" too - up to the side decals - thank God no further than that! Hold on... I said paint in my previous post didn't I?? I'm laughing at myself right now - I know better than that... Must be the pain med from a orthopedic hacksawing yesterday

I appreciate your wisdom oops! and will take a few pics for you soon when I plan to start this little fix which might be over the winter months. Right now, staying out of the 100+ heat which isn't good on me or the repair work Especially since I would pull it inside my fathers shop to do it

Also, is it possible to patch the work up to the same point as the first attempt or do I have to do the entire hull due to the nature of the re-gelling and clearcoating itself?

most fiberglass/gellcoat reapirs of a smaller nature can be done in a matter of hours.....if its below the waterline, and the glass is compromised...is suggest you do it as soon as you can....
usually there is no need to re gellcoat the entire hull unless the hull is totally whacked

if its over 100 deg, just catylize the ve resin colder....down to 1.7%

If you do some research I think you will find that your hull is SMC(Sheet Molded Composite) not VE and the finish is a 2 part epoxy paint rather than gell coat. I have done a faily major repair on a yamaha hull and can tell you that the SMC has a mold release agent that is incorporated in the material. Any time you sand or grind you bring up new mold release. Yamaha recommends only epoxy based materials for the repair of these hulls including any repair or fairing compounds. The two part epoxy paints can be vary toxic so I used a one part polyeurethane paint sprayed over an epoxy primer that I rolled on. Im thinking your Black hull color is Imron "Jet Black" .. Your above the rub rail should be Gelcoat ..
