Re: Needs of Americans

Why is it the responsibility of government to provide for people? As strange as it sounds I keep a copy of the Constitution in my desk (I'm a political junkie). And that wonderful document provides the foundation upon which our government is built. It is very specific about the roles and function of the federal governemtn-1) provide for the common defense and 2) regulate interstate commerce. All other rights and powers are reserved for the states (Article 10). Yet somehow the constitution has been twisted and mangled into a document that provides for a government that is supposed to be our parent and guardian from cradle to grave. Point is-now the people of this country expect the government to provide for their every need-that is far from the type of government our founding fathers had in mind.

Hmmm.

Some folks seem to think that nothing is being done to help those in need.

Many folks are in "need" because of their own poor choices or their belief that there will always be a handout for them.

If one sums the Federal, state, local, church and private handouts to the needy, how many billions of bux are handed out now?

These same flimsy appeals were whined during the Apollo program when some folks seemed to think that billions were sent to the moon and left lying there. The hundreds of thousands of people who had good jobs only because of the program don't agree.

If congress cuts my taxes the money will go very quickly into the pockets of people currently unemployed, and from there to the pockets of people currently struggling to make ends meet, etc., etc. All of those folks will pay taxes on it when they get it, if they keep it, and when they spend it. One buck added to our economy adds several bux to GDP.

My heart hurts with others who see the losers in our society and want to "fix" it, just like they want predators not to kill bunnies. Some things will always be.

Many people in many countrys would be thrilled to trade their lives with one of our downtrodden "poor".

Well, enough venting. Have fun. :)

Re: Needs of Americans

Well, I'm just going to say one more thing and then I am done with this topic.

I for one am glad to help the one's I can, and wish more people would help, but as I see it, people are either afraid to help or just don't want to and that is sad.

I know I can't solve the problem all by myself, but I will help the ones I can.

There are so many out there that have fallen on hard times due to reasons they had no control over and that is the one's that I try to help.

Like I said earlier, there are those out there that would not work in a pie factory and gripe at a free lunch, and those I have no use for, cause they just cause greater hardship on the one's that really need it.

Have a good week-end.

I agree with just about everyones response here.

Just one more thing.

Before we start sending all this money overseas, how about the government paying the dependants of victims of Sept 11, 2001?

These people have only gotten small compensation for that event, and almost none of the money promised to NYC has been delivered.

Now here in NYC, they are closing firehouses , not hiring new firefighters to replace those lost on Sept. 11, not hiring new police officers, laying-off school teachers and sanitation workers !

Now, Hillary Clinton has seen to it that $4 million of the money slated for NYC, has been sent to her community in upstate NY, and not one person who was lost on Sept. 11 came from that community!

Then Chuck Schuler has seen it fit to send millions of dollars of NYC money to his constituants in his home community, yet the people of NYC, who were the victims of Sept. 11, now have to deal with 8 firehouse closings, that constitutes a 5 to 10 minute response time from FDNY, up from a 2 to 3 minute response time.

The money these 2 Democrats stole from the people of NYC, will cost the people of NYC with their lives!

This is not the choice of the people of NYC, but rather that of those who are suppose to represent them.

Here, in an old city like NY, those reponse times are the difference between life and death (there are alot of old building here that are more flammable than a book of matches), but the Democrats that represent NY feel that its more important to use the money slated to save the city from economic disaster, for their own re-election campaigns.

The problems of this country can be traced back to one thing and one thing only, GREED !

As long as this is the way the government fixes things, nothing will ever get done and not one problem will be solved.

Kenny, I agree and am just as angry about the $4 Million Dollars, but it is in the hands of the Red Cross. I do know that those monies cannot be distributed to other Red Cross affiliates even though they are in a financial crisis and having to close their doors at several locations here in the U.S. This informaiton came to me from a former top Red Cross Executive and I consider it credible.

There must be a website where we can voiced our anger about where the money is and how long this is taking to get to those it was promised to.

Re: Needs of Americans

I guess I have a kneejerk negative response to this thread because whenever we spend a lot of money on something, like this war, people tend to conclude that this money would have better been spent on social services. It is an entitlement attitude. From my perspective, the more you funnel into social services, the bigger the problem becomes because all humans(or animals for that matter, feed migratory birds in the winter for example and they don't migrate) want the most money for the least amount of work and we are getting to a point where the taxpayers backs are breaking. People are finding it more cost effective not to work as pointed out by Ladyfish. This is not to say that people shouldn't be helped. Family and communities used to do that, but the govnmnt canot do it because it just creates a giant bureaucracy(sp). This diesn't even address the social ramifications(incentive to raise families as single mothers, men with no responsibilities or values, a sponging underclass with an entitlement attitude.) The local taxes are a big part of the problem. We in the middle class are being taxed to poverty and it has to be stopped, without the class envy baloney. I pay more in escrow now than I did 12 years ago for my entire first house mortgage. I do admire the generous spirit expressed gere by all, SBN, Lady, but hope you will al rethink what it will take to get the healthy society we want.
