Neutral safety switch" on a Searay with a Mecr Bravo 5.0L MPI

Good day all:

I now have to move my shifter back and forth from fwd to Rev inorder to get my Searay 220 motor to start. I figure it is the neutral safety switch but not sure where it is. I have checked the batteries and made sure that all connections are good. I am thinking it is on control.

My question is it something that can be repaired or do I have to replace the entire control. I have surfed around and not found much info. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Thanks,

Mike

Hi there, Welcome to iboats! yes the neutral safety switch is located inside the control module.

Will the engine not physically turn over until you set the shifter in the "right spot"?

What year is the boat? Can you post a photo of the shifter handle to help identify it easier?

Well it is a 2003 Searay and the single engine pistol grip. I have to go back and forth and all of the sudden it will start to turn over.

Do you know where the starter relay is on this engine? Going to try cleaning that also.

So you're aware, You do not have a starter relay per say but you do have a starter solenoid that looks like item number 23 in the link below.

http://www.mercruiserparts.com/Show...inbr=8093&bnbr=40&bdesc=Electrical+Components

The two relays are for the fuel pump and main power relay. Item numbers 16.

Your shifter control handle is the commander 4000 series remote control pistol grip.

Question is it something that can be repaired or do I have to replace the entire control.
This will depend on exactly went wrong inside the control module. There is an possibility that you may be able to readjusted something to make it work again before needing a new control module. You won't know until you or someone with time and patience and a service manual gets in there and takes it apart and figures it all out.

It could be a misaligned shift handle, shift cable adjustment, intermittent neutral safety switch electrical problem, intermittent mechanical problem.

Did this just start happening out of the blue or was there any type of service work done recently that may have affected the shifting system?

Thanks for taking the time to answer my question.

It has gotten progressively worst over the last few months. I will make sure all connections are clean on " starter solenoid ". No maintenance besides me changing the oil and ignition switch. That was 2 weeks ago so I am sure that was not the cause since I had this problem for months.

Is there a service manual online? I am a retired Air Force and used to be a Aircraft Mechanic so I wouldn't mind taking a look.

Thank You,

Mike

it will progressively get worse.

go to the stickies at the top of the sub-forum (labeled adults only) for links to online mercruiser manuals.

The neutral switch is a small mechanical limit switch activated by a cam. once you can get to it, they are not to hard to swap if you can solder leads on a replacement. take care in pulling the control apart. here is a link to exploded views of teh controls ACCESSORIES REMOTE CONTROLSVOLUME 2 - Mercury, Mercruiser, Force, etc. Parts Lookup

Thanks for the info. If I short the yellow and the yellow/black wires my guess is that it bypasses switch. Seems like a good test to be 100% sure before tearing into the control ???

Yes, connect them together to bypass the switch as a test. Also check your notification inbox.

It finally warmed up a bit. I believe that I have a bad starter solenoid. The neutral switch is working fine. I get a single click from starter solenoid. If I move the control either fwd or back I get nothing. If I just keep clicking finally all of the sudden it will turn over.

Thanks,

Mike

OK I know where the "Starter Solenoid" (89-96158T) is. What is a "Slave Solenoid" and where is it located?

Go up to post 4 by Fun Times and click on the link, it is item 23.

Edit: the part number your listing is the slave solenoid. The starter solenoid is on top the starter

Sounds great, glad you got it fixed.
Sort of my bad for all the terms of parts changing names in the parts listing.
