New 115 E Tec Stalls when put into gear

Just bought a new 115 e tec to replace a 2001 115 hp Johson. The E tec starts up great and idles great, but frequently stalls out when put into gear. It will generally stall out 2 or 3 times before it will actually go into gear. The same thing also happened with my old motor. Dealer thought it was the fuel line collapsing so I replaced the fuel line between the tank and the primer bulb and also replaced the primer bulb. I inspected the old fuel line and it looked fine. Seems odd that it would idle with no problem and then stall as soon as it is put into gear. Does anyone have any ideas what might be wrong?

Sure is suspicious being on both motors. If its on a built in tank see how it acts on a portable tank. For that mater just try a different tank anyway.Sometimes if a motor is running lean it will stall when a load is applied.
Seems unlikely on a new etec.Did you confirm it is idling at the proper rpm most motors are 700-750.

sounds like a fuel restriction to me.

Try kicking up the idle rpm a tad.

Have to agree with this. Same symptom on both motors being fed by the same tank !!!

Get a portable tank, new (or different) line/connectors/primer bulb

I connected the fuel line to a spare tank and the problem disappeared. Any ideas on what the problem could be on the fuel tank side? I already replaced the fuel line from the tank to the primer bulb.

Thanks

Re: New 115 E Tec Stalls when put into gear

Air leak into fuel system is the most likely, although there could be other problems, such as anti-siphon valve in tank outlet hanging up, pickup screen blocked with trash, etc. Another remote possibility is a cracked tank pickup tube. Testing with another tank was a good idea.

BTW, there is NO mechanical idle RPM adjustment on your motor. Idle is solely controlled by the EMM (my motors idle @ 480RPM, in and out of gear). The EMM detects the shift into gear and maintains the idle at that same RPM. Very clever, those computers! The only way to change the idle is by using the BRP sw connected to the EMM, and it's not recommended to do that, period, for any E-Tec.

I had one that stalled at idle in gear,it was running rich.I adjusted injectors manualy with the lap top and it cleared up the trouble. It was a 07 115 etec update map and it was ok.

This motor, if just bought, is under warranty. I wouldn't screw with anything ... let BRP and your dealer straighten this out, if it's a motor issue and I sure wouldn't change the injector timing, which clearly would void the warranty..

How did you "adjust the injectors"?

There is a diagnostic procedure in the Evinrude software program that will TEMPORARILY richen or lean out the injectors, but that only lasts until the motor is turned off, then it reverts to the factory EPA settings on the next startup.

I definately would not fool with a new ETEC motor. Doing so without the proper training is not a good idea and most likely would void the warranty.

Since the change in tanks seems to have cleared the problem, it looks like there is nothing wrong with the motor, anyway. That being the case, time to trouble shoot the boat's fuel system. You've had some good suggestions and I would add that you might want to make sure that the tank is venting properly.

Temporarily right BRP Sent new injectors maps & had to load it into each injector.

celebrate by re-plumbing the whole lot, blow out the vent line, remove fuel pickup from tank and clear the brass pickup filter, blow the anti syphon out.
Get the newer ethanol resistant fuel feed line.
