I troll about 4 hours per week. Never speeding any more. Anyone can give me their expert advice on this particular combination. Of course weight and costs are major factors. 1991 hull with not so strong a transom. My other option would be a new 200 hpdi-or a good used 66ox efi. Just sold my 1994 225 hp carburetion motor.

Appreciate your comments.

1991 hull with not so strong a transom.

:eek::facepalm: Fix the transom before you do anything else.

Those big 4 strokes troll well. My own experience going with guides on LOTW for many years is that the Suzukis troll smoother and quieter. . .either the DF140, which is very light for a big 4 stroke, or the "big block" DF150, which is a detuned DF175.

My choice would be the DF140. Your boat will handle better with the lighter engine.

Good luck. :)

Thanks JB, the transom is not defective, just that I think in 1991 those boats were not built to handle a 225 Yamaha 4 stroke which weights 683 lbs- lots more than the average 2 stroke engine; like they were not configured like modern ones. Hence my reason for wanting to use a 150 four stroke which weighs ,I think 468 lbs. I have heard a lot about those Suzukis but there are no dealers in my neck of the woods.

150hp is way too small for a 24' walkaround boat. You will be disappointed and if you go to sell or trade it in later, you will also be disappointed.

The transom will handle the weight no problem. It's the weight distribtuion of the hull that "might" be a problem.

The Yamaha F225- F300 offshore weights #562. Put a sand bag on top of your existing motor and see how the boat behaves. I doubht that #80 is going to make a big difference on a 24' boat

What HP, exactly, is that boat rated for??? Figure you need at least 70% of that HP.

Use numbers if you want to say somethng that matters. "Way too small" is meaningless unless compared to actual ratings of boat and outboard..

Re: the Suzi DF140. It was also sold by BRP as a Johnson. There is a rebuilt 2004 on eBay right now that can be serviced by a BRP dealer. It weighs about 410#.

First, you need to compare the actual HP rating of your boat to any engine you are considering.
If seahorse is right underpowering would not be a good idea.

Max. HP on that boat is most likely 300 HP. You see a lot of them running twin 150's

Whatever 4-stroke you end up with, keep an eye on the engine oil level and condition -- especially if you troll alot. Those engines tend to make oil (oil gets diluted with fuel hence increases level on the dip stick). Over-propping also adds to that condition. If you troll a long while, make sure you run it wide open for the trip back to the dock so the engine heats up and thus has a chance to rid itself of the fuel. If the dock is just around the bend, take the long way back.

The boat, a 1991 model is rated for max. hp of 235hp. It came factory with a 225hp 2 stroke Yamaha which ran well up to 35 mph with 4 persons. Might have to settle for the F200 or stick to 2 stroke and get a 200 hpdi which is much lighter.I like the sand bag idea but engine has already been sold. Thanks guys, appreciate the suggestions so far.
